Skill Trumps Equipment

For every unit of “energy” you spend on acquiring new gadgets, gear, equipment you should spend five times that amount learning how to use that gear or even knowing how to improvise without it. No matter how prepared you are there will be situations you didn’t foresee. You must be ready to MacGyver that situation by understanding how to assess things quickly, then meet the needs of the moment.

Skills to master:

  • Map reading / navigation
  • Knife skills / butchering
  • Fire making
  • Gathering food
  • Cooking
